Zinfra – Natural Gas Pipeline Rupture

NDE Solutions was engaged to undertake emergency works to support Zinfra after a natural gas pipeline ruptured in central Queensland.

In March 2024, a 12” natural gas underground pipeline experienced a catastrophic rupture from external corrosion attacking its way through the thickness of the metal from a localised spot of coating failure.

After containment and isolation of the line, NDE Solutions was engaged to be a part of the emergency repair team with the task of doing a code compliant inspection of the newly fabricated and installed joint.

Our Difference

Within 24 hours, NDE Solutions had mobilised a team to site to support inspection and restoration efforts. Working alongside PipeTek, and over the course of three days, our team safely and successfully inspected four golden welds and two TOR Welds utilising radiography, magnetic particle and advanced phased array ultrasonic testing.

The years of experience within our expert pipeline inspection team, in conjunction with PipeTek, reduced downtime and allowed our client to safely repair their asset.

Our work was vital in the urgent restoration of a critical asset impacting the greater Gladstone manufacturing region including Rio Tinto’s Yarwun alumina refinery, and Boyne Smelters – Australia’s second largest aluminum smelter.

“NDE Solutions has played a significant role in the response and subsequent integrity works, supporting the Zinfra team to ensure we cared for the safety and well-being of our employees and contractors during the event and minimising the impact to the communities we support and our large industrial customers”
